Synopsis

The fifth novel opens as the dragon Anwyn wakes after three years of dormancy, nursing a grudge against Rhapsody for having imprisoned her, and sets out seeking retribution. At the same time, Achmed works to rebuild and defend his kingdom against assassins seeking revenge against him, while elsewhere a strange, misshapen magical being attracts the attention of a ruthless despot who sees it as a means to further his ambitions of conquest. Amid these converging threats, new figures rise to prominence on both sides of the widening conflict, and the long-awaited birth of a child tied to the series' mythology adds a further complication. The mounting tensions between dragons, mortals, and would-be conquerors point toward a wider war that threatens to engulf much of the world.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Symphony of Ages): Publication order = internal chronology throughout, confirmed by the author directly (Fantasy-Faction 'Cauldron Interview', 2018): a first trilogy, two bridge novels, a second trilogy, and a capper. Corrects several commonly-repeated years: Destiny is 2001 (not 2000), The Merchant Emperor is 2014 (not 2010), The Hollow Queen is 2015 (not 2013).

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
