Synopsis

The second novel of the Halfblood Chronicles picks up as the elven-ruled world begins to experience real social upheaval, with young elves starting to question the hierarchy that keeps humans enslaved. Shana continues to lead her band of halfblood wizards, human runaways, and dragon shamans in their ongoing resistance against elven rule, while the story introduces the mysterious Iron People, an enigmatic group her group encounters during their travels. In parallel, Lady Sheyrena and her brother Lorryn, members of elven nobility who discover a halfblood hidden within their own household, are drawn into the growing rebellion, straining their loyalty to their family and class. As Shana's group uncovers secrets tied to the Iron People that could aid or endanger the wizards' cause, tensions escalate among the elven lords themselves over how to respond to the spreading unrest.

Notes

  • Publication month disputed: official site gives Jan 1995; Kirkus gives June 1995. Year is solid; month unresolved.
  • From the series record (The Halfblood Chronicles): Closed trilogy: Andre Norton died in 2005 and Lackey never continued it solo. A fourth title, 'Elvenbred', is mentioned uncited on one Wikipedia bibliography page as 'planned but never published', single-sourced, not independently corroborated, not registered.
