Synopsis
Forging the Darksword, published by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman in 1987, opens the Darksword Trilogy in the magocracy of Thimhallan, where magic sustains every aspect of society and those born without it, called Dead, are cast out or killed as infants. Joram is a royal-born child smuggled away from that fate and raised in hiding, bearing scars from the ordeal that mark his unusual origins. As he grows into a young man surrounded by magic he cannot wield, Joram becomes the subject of a dark prophecy foretelling that he will bring about the world's destruction, a fate that pushes him toward forging a weapon, the Darksword, capable of channeling magic in ways no ordinary Dead person should be able to command.
