Margaret Edith Weis is an American author born March 16, 1948, in Independence, Missouri, who discovered fantasy literature while earning a BA in creative writing and literature from the University of Missouri in 1970. After graduating she worked as a proofreader and editor at a Kansas City publishing company and then as advertising director for Herald Publishing House from 1972 to 1983, before TSR, Inc. hired her as a book editor in 1983, despite her having applied for a game-editor position. At TSR she partnered with Tracy Hickman to develop the Dragonlance universe, beginning with the novel Dragons of Autumn Twilight (1984), which sold roughly four million copies across the US and UK and launched the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy, Dragonlance Legends, the Darksword trilogy, and the seven-volume Deathgate Cycle. She also wrote the Star of the Guardians space opera series and contributed to the Sovereign Stone and Dragonvarld trilogies. Weis founded Sovereign Press, Inc. and Margaret Weis Productions, which licensed major franchises including Serenity and Battlestar Galactica for tabletop role-playing development. In 1999, Pyramid magazine named her one of the millennium's most influential figures in gaming fiction, and she was inducted into the Origins Hall of Fame in 2002. She married Robert William Baldwin and later Don Perrin, and has two children; in 1993 she was diagnosed with and successfully treated for breast cancer.
