Synopsis
Haplo, a Patryn agent continuing his exploration of the four worlds created by the ancient Sartan, is sent to Abarrach, a dying realm of volcanic caverns, where he unexpectedly finds Alfred, a Sartan who has secretly stowed away aboard his ship. Forced into an uneasy partnership, the two travel together through a landscape of lava, stone, and poisonous fumes, discovering a realm on the brink of collapse where food is scarce and the great magical colossi that once sustained Abarrach's civilization are slowly failing. Amid the wreckage of Sartan society, they find that the remaining inhabitants have turned to necromancy, the forbidden practice of animating the dead, in a desperate bid to survive their world's decline, forcing Haplo and Alfred to navigate a society whose customs and politics are shaped entirely by death and its dark magic.
