Synopsis

From the Forest, the twenty-fourth volume of the Saga of Recluce, follows Alayiakal, a sixteen-year-old growing up within the militaristic nation of Cyador under the strict tutelage of his father, a Mirror Lancer officer. Alayiakal trains in swordsmanship and magical theory while striving to appear an ordinary, fortunate young soldier, all the while concealing ties to the Great Forest and burgeoning magus abilities that set him apart from his peers. His outward life of discipline is complicated by unexplained encounters near the forest's edge, including a mysterious young woman and a creature touched by chaos, incidents that defy easy explanation. As unforeseen weapons and remnants of ancient technology surface around him, Alayiakal senses he will soon be forced to choose between the soldier's path expected of him and the hidden nature he has always had to conceal.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Saga of Recluce: position 24 of 26: previous Fairhaven Rising (2021) · next Overcaptain (2024)
