Synopsis

The fifth volume of The Wars of Light and Shadow opens in a climate of intrigue, fanaticism and rampaging armies, as distrust of sorcery fuels a widespread purge of the mageborn across Athera, with Arithon, the Master of Shadow, made the most hated target of all through his half-brother Lysaer's manipulation of public sentiment. By the book's opening, those still loyal to Arithon and willing to defend him find themselves overwhelmed, in retreat, and facing the prospect of near-total defeat as Lysaer's forces and the wider persecution close in around them. Amid this deteriorating situation, new schemes and shifting loyalties among the Fellowship sorcerers, the Koriani order and Athera's warring factions set the stage for a betrayal whose full shape has not yet been revealed.
