Synopsis
Rowan has vanished and Michael Curry falls into deep depression searching for her, drawn back toward purpose in part through his growing closeness with Mona Mayfair, a precocious and powerful teenage witch cousin. The novel follows Rowan's own ordeal in parallel, as she is effectively held captive across Europe by the being called Lasher, who works to keep her isolated from her family while attempting again and again to impregnate her. Even confined, Rowan manages to smuggle DNA samples out to scientific colleagues, and the analysis that follows begins to reveal that Lasher is not the ghost or spirit her family long believed him to be, but something of an entirely different, ancient nature altogether. As Michael's search for Rowan intensifies and Mona's role in the family's affairs grows more central, the true, inhuman origins of the being called Lasher start to come into focus.
