Synopsis
Ashlar, believing himself the last surviving member of his ancient species and now running a toy corporation in New York, learns that another of his kind may exist, drawing him back into contact with the Mayfair family's unfolding affairs. Rowan Mayfair remains in a semi-catatonic state following the traumatic events of the previous novel, while Mona discovers that she is pregnant by Michael Curry, and that the child she carries may itself be a member of Ashlar's species rather than fully human. The novel expands considerably on the deep history of Ashlar's people, tracing their long, difficult survival among humans across the centuries, even as the secretive Talamasca order is revealed to have its own hidden agenda for gathering surviving members of the species together.
