Anne Rice was born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien on October 4, 1941, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to an Irish Catholic family; her father was a naval veteran and postal service executive, while her mother struggled with alcoholism. She spent her early years in New Orleans before the family relocated to Texas and later California. She attended St. Alphonsus School in New Orleans, and earned a B.A. in political science in 1964 and an M.A. in creative writing in 1972, both from San Francisco State University. Rice became a full-time author following the publication of Interview with the Vampire in 1976, going on to write across Gothic fiction, horror, erotic literature, and religious fiction, at times using the pseudonyms Anne Rampling and A.N. Roquelaure for her erotic novels; her florid, sensuous prose style became one of her literary hallmarks. Her bestselling Vampire Chronicles series includes Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat (1985), and The Queen of the Damned (1988), while she also wrote the Mayfair Witches trilogy and the Christ the Lord novels about the life of Jesus. Her books sold more than one hundred million copies worldwide. She won the 1991 Locus Award for The Witching Hour, the Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and the Lord Ruthven Award in 2017. Rice died December 11, 2021, in Rancho Mirage, California, from stroke complications at age eighty, and was interred at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans.
