Synopsis
Magic Burns is the second novel in the Kate Daniels urban fantasy series, set in an Atlanta where waves of encroaching magic and lingering technology take turns dominating the unstable city. Mercenary investigator Kate Daniels, who normally cleans up the magical messes other people cause, is hired by the shapeshifter Pack to look into the sudden disappearance of a crossbowman, a seemingly small case that quickly proves far stranger than expected. Along the way she meets Julie, a resourceful street kid desperately searching for her own missing mother, and finds herself drawn into Julie's search as well. As Kate follows the threads connecting both disappearances, she uncovers signs of mythological forces and ancient sea demons stirring beneath the city, hinting at a looming magical surge that could threaten Atlanta on a much larger scale than either missing-person case alone.
