Synopsis

Majipoor Chronicles is a collection of interconnected stories set across the history of the Majipoor series, framed by a young archivist named Hissune who, in the Register of Souls beneath the Labyrinth, accesses the recorded memories of people who lived in earlier eras of the planet. Reading these memory-records as a form of vicarious travel through time, Hissune experiences episodes ranging from early human colonization and encounters with the shapeshifting native Metamorphs to the lives of hunters, prisoners, and officials scattered across Majipoor's history. Each tale stands largely on its own while contributing to a broader tapestry of the planet's past. Woven throughout is Hissune's own quiet transformation as he absorbs these lives, gaining a perspective on Majipoor's history that will shape his future role, following directly after the 1980 events of Lord Valentine's Castle in the series' internal chronology.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Lord Valentine Cycle): Majipoor Chronicles (a linked collection of 5 short stories and 5 novelettes/novellas, each following a different point-of-view character across Majipoor's history) is registered Core, not Expanded, under the collection-as-Core exception -- it is the primary reading unit for book 2 of this cycle, not a peripheral side collection.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
