Overview
The Majipoor Cycle is Robert Silverberg's vast, lost-technology far-future world, settled long ago by humans and several other species and ruled by a Coronal from the impossibly enormous Castle atop Mount Castle, with psychic dream-communication, shapeshifting native Metamorphs, and no true magic in the traditional fantasy sense. Spanning seven novels published between 1980 and 2001 across three linked groupings, the Lord Valentine Cycle, the Lord Prestimion Cycle, and a standalone collection, Tales of Majipoor, the series is widely treated by genre institutions as fantasy despite its planetary-romance, science-fictional premise, sitting deliberately on the genre boundary. The opening novel, Lord Valentine's Castle (1980), won the 1981 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and was a finalist for the Hugo Award, and the series as a whole is regarded as one of the more ambitious attempts to build a single, coherent, genuinely alien-feeling world across multiple books and decades.
