Overview
The Book of Words is J. V. Jones's debut epic-fantasy trilogy, comprising The Baker's Boy (1995), A Man Betrayed (1996), and Master and Fool (1996), set in a secondary world split between the kingdom of the Four Lands and a colder northern realm bound by clan law. It follows Jack, a runaway baker's apprentice discovering an unwanted and dangerous magical gift, and Melliandra, a young noblewoman fleeing an arranged marriage, as a kingdom destabilized by betrayal and succession politics slides toward open war, drawing in soldiers, sorcerers, and a mercenary knight along the way. The trilogy is noted among genre readers for its comparatively grim treatment of its young protagonists' hardships relative to other mid-1990s epic fantasy aimed at a similar audience, and it helped establish Jones as a prominent voice in the wave of post-Jordan multi-volume epic fantasy of that decade, leading into her later Sword of Shadows series.
