Robert Silverberg was born January 15, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish parents, and was a passionate reader from childhood who began submitting stories to science fiction magazines as a teenager. He earned a BA in English Literature from Columbia University in 1956; while still a student, he published his first novel, Revolt on Alpha C, in 1955. He is a prolific American science fiction author and editor. From 1956 to 1959 he maintained an extraordinarily productive output, averaging five published stories monthly and producing over eighty stories in 1958 alone. During the 1959 science fiction market downturn, he diversified into historical non-fiction, crime fiction, and other genres under various pseudonyms, including roughly 200 erotic novels. By the mid-1960s he returned to science fiction with greater literary sophistication, influenced by the New Wave movement. His notable works include Nightwings (1969), Downward to the Earth (1970), The World Inside (1971), Dying Inside (1972), and Lord Valentine's Castle (1980), which founded the long-running Majipoor fantasy series. Silverberg is a multiple Hugo and Nebula Award winner, was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1999, was named SFWA Grand Master in 2004, and has attended every Hugo Award ceremony since 1953.
