Synopsis
In Mortal Coil, Derek Landy's fifth novel in the series, Valkyrie Cain, now training in necromancy and increasingly aware of her connection to a powerful and destructive alternate identity called Darquesse, finds herself targeted by a faction of necromancers who believe she is destined to fulfil an ancient prophecy as the "Death Bringer." Remnants, malevolent beings that possess and corrupt their hosts, pursue the same goal of controlling Valkyrie and pushing her toward that transformation. With Skulduggery Pleasant and allies including the vampire Caelan and her boyfriend Fletcher, Valkyrie tries to understand her True Name and the extent of her abilities while resisting the necromancers' plans for her. The fifth book follows Valkyrie's struggle to control her own fate as rival forces close in, each with their own designs on the power she may or may not be able to master.
