Derek Landy was born in Lusk, County Dublin, Ireland, and attended Drogheda Grammar School before studying animation at Ballyfermot College. He worked on his family's vegetable farm before beginning a career as a screenwriter, writing two produced films, Dead Bodies, which won an Irish Film and Television Academy award, and Boy Eats Girl, which received an IFTA nomination for his script. Frustrated by the collaborative constraints of filmmaking, he turned to novel writing, and is best known for the nine-book Skulduggery Pleasant series and its sequels and spin-offs, as well as the Demon Road trilogy. Since 2018 he has also written comic books for Marvel, including The Black Order and All-Out Avengers. Landy won the Red House Children's Book Award in 2008, and three further Skulduggery Pleasant novels, Playing with Fire, Mortal Coil, and Last Stand of Dead Men, each won the Irish Children's Book Award, in 2009, 2010, and 2013 respectively; the series was voted Ireland's book of the decade in 2010.
