Synopsis
A huge caravan of the Verdano, a wagon-travelling people called Wozacy, makes its way toward the Lytheran Highland, hoping to reach freedom beyond the Olekady mountains. The crossing is dangerous: innocent people are being killed along the route, and the movement of so many travellers threatens to unsettle the whole border region. Kenneth's company of the Mountain Guard is given extra soldiers, an unruly group who often ignore orders, and must guide the caravan through. Meanwhile Kailean and Daghena, two skilled fighters from Laskolnyk's czardan, train for a spy mission in which they must find who is behind the killings. Their paths are heading toward the same place.
