Synopsis
The novel crosses a harsh desert, the crowded streets of the wealthy eastern cities and an island ruled by feuding families, which is also the seat of a local god. Its characters are caught between a family vendetta and a slave uprising, while larger powers play their own game against fate. Honour, loyalty and oaths sworn to the dead press on everyone involved, and even immortal beings find themselves pushed to act. The story moves between these settings and groups of people, whose separate quarrels slowly pull together into one conflict that none of them fully controls.
