Synopsis

The Lands of Corza are twelve kingdoms founded by a legendary king, a world drawn in the image of central and southern Europe in the Middle Ages, without magic or imaginary races. In this first novel there are thirteen: the thirteenth is the realm carved out by Hoc, a charismatic usurper who stole his lands from one of the twelve kings, and whose faceless enmity now threatens them all. Neferlöen, the fifteen-year-old adopted daughter of the King of Levionda, is suddenly promoted to represent her tutor in the southern lands of his kingdom, and finds herself leading the fight against the mercenary knights known as the Intruders in Black. Through war, death and diplomacy she must reconcile the ambitions of Corza's rival thrones and bring peace among its powers, while the secret of her own parentage waits to decide her fate. The author's debut, written at sixteen.

Notes

  • From the series record (Terras de Corza): Madalena Santos's Portuguese saga of the Lands of Corza, a fictional set of twelve kingdoms modelled on central and southern Europe, told in four independent novels set in four eras, from the Middle Ages to industrialisation and back to pre-Roman origins, without magic or imaginary races: a geopolitical epic of travel and intrigue.
