Synopsis

Outcasts of Order, the twenty-first volume of the Saga of Recluce, follows directly on from The Mongrel Mage, finding the black mage Beltur and the smith Jorhan in the city of Elparta after Beltur's costly role in defending it from invasion. Together the two have begun reviving the long-lost craft of cupridium forging, a partnership beginning to bring them prosperity and, for Beltur, growing recognition alongside a promising bond with the healer Jessyla. That success draws unwanted attention: Elparta's ruling traders scheme to seize the profits of Beltur and Jorhan's work without paying them, a plot that gains force when an ambitious rival mage, jealous of Beltur's standing and his interest in Jessyla, allies with the traders against them. Stripped of their livelihood, the two craftsmen face the approaching winter as exiles from the city they helped save.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
