Synopsis

The Mongrel Mage begins the twentieth volume of the Saga of Recluce, introducing Beltur, a young mage living in a world where practitioners typically wield either white Chaos magic or black Order magic, never both. Beltur discovers he possesses a combination of talents not documented in hundreds of years, able to draw on both forms of magic at once, an ability that makes him a target rather than a marvel. Pursued by a power-hungry white mage who views his unprecedented gift as a threat, Beltur is forced to flee his home. He eventually finds refuge among a community of Order mages who take him in and help him develop his unusual dual abilities, training that proves increasingly necessary as the white mage who drove him out continues to search for him and threatens his new home.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
