Synopsis

The Mage-Fire War, the twenty-second volume of the Saga of Recluce, opens as Beltur and his companions, including the healer Jessyla and the mage Lhadoraak, are driven out of Axalt by prejudice against practitioners of chaos magic. The Duchess of Montgren offers them an unusual second chance: to serve as councilors of Haven, a declining, mageless town whose population has dwindled and whose healing house has closed for lack of funds and staff. With only a single company of soldiers for protection, Beltur and his companions must restore order to Haven, reopen its institutions, and collect overdue tariffs, all while smugglers exploit the region to dodge duties owed to neighboring lands. Looming over their efforts is the growing strength of Hydlen, whose army marches alongside white mages of its own, leaving the newly appointed councilors little room for error.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
