Synopsis
Picking up roughly a season after King's Dragon, this sequel follows an expanding cast whose fortunes have shifted since the kingdom's borders were first breached: Sanglant, King Henry's half-Eika son, is held captive; Liath now serves as one of King Henry's Eagles, royal messengers with their own dangerous secrets; and Alain has been unexpectedly elevated to heir of Count Lavastine. With the city of Gent having fallen under Eika control, the characters are pulled into overlapping currents of court intrigue, military crisis, and religious controversy, as clergy such as the sharp, conflicted Rosvita navigate a church whose outward piety does not always match its inward motives. None of the principal characters are allowed to remain safe for long, as each is repeatedly separated from whatever security they had and forced to confront new dangers on their own.
