Synopsis
Following the pivotal battle at Gent, the third Crown of Stars novel moves away from the largely self-contained storylines of the earlier books toward a more tightly serialized structure, as its widening cast begins to grasp both the true stakes of the conflict engulfing Wendar and the deeper, stranger nature of the threat massing beyond its borders. Multiple characters offer conflicting accounts of the same pivotal events, leaving readers and characters alike uncertain which version can be trusted. Liath becomes a still more central figure as she is forced to confront unsettling truths about her own upbringing and birth, even as political intrigue intensifies at court and the Eika gain a new and more capable leadership that changes the shape of the war.
