Synopsis
Set decades after the fall of the Drenai Empire to Tenaka Khan's invaders, the novel follows a young man named Kiall on a desperate quest to rescue a village girl, Ravenna, who has been taken by slavers raiding the countryside. Lacking any skill at arms himself, Kiall enlists the help of a band of legendary former heroes now well past their prime, including the aging duelist Chareos and the once-feared warrior Beltzer, persuading them to take up their old trades one more time. Together the mismatched group sets out across dangerous territory, forced to confront both the slavers and the heroes' own complicated pasts along the way.

Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
