Synopsis
The novel follows Waylander, a former assassin consumed by guilt and grief after his family's murder years earlier, who gradually seeks redemption by assembling an unlikely group of allies to help restore a kingdom he had once helped destabilize through his past work as a hired killer. Hunted by the Guild of assassins who once employed him and pursued by soldiers loyal to the very regime his earlier actions helped weaken, Waylander must decide whether the man he has become can outweigh the damage done by the man he used to be, even as old enemies close in from every side of his uneasy new path.

Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series The Drenai Saga: position 3 of 11: previous The King Beyond the Gate (1985) · next Quest for Lost Heroes (1990)
