Overview
The Drenai Saga is David Gemmell's signature heroic-fantasy sequence: 11 novels (1984-2004) around the iconic heroes Druss, Waylander and Skilgannon. Legend (1984), the story of the aging axeman Druss at the siege of Dros Delnoch, is a genre classic: the fantasy field's principal fan-voted prize (the Legend Award, 2009-2018) was named after it. Gemmell died in July 2006; the canon is closed. Written as Gemmell's debut novel while he was undergoing cancer treatment, Legend established the saga's recurring concerns with aging warriors, the cost of violence, and flawed heroism under siege, and later volumes moved both backward and forward in the Drenai timeline to follow the younger Druss, the assassin Waylander, and the redemption-seeking swordsman Skilgannon across different eras of the same world. The saga's blunt, unglamorous treatment of battle and its morally complicated heroes were widely influential on later grimdark and military fantasy writers.
