Synopsis
Skilgannon, a former military commander of considerable renown, has retreated into monastic life in search of peace after years of bloodshed he can no longer justify to himself. His hard-won solitude is interrupted when turmoil elsewhere in the realm draws him back out into the world, leading him to cross paths with the aging Druss the Legend and to accept a mission to rescue a friend and her young daughter from danger. As Skilgannon is pulled back toward the kind of violence he had sworn to leave behind, he must reckon with whether redemption is something a man like him can still hope to find.

Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series The Drenai Saga: position 10 of 11: previous Hero in the Shadows (2000) · next The Swords of Night and Day (2004)
