Synopsis

Svavelvinter, published in 2004, opens the Chronicle of the Fifth Conflux in Trakorien, a kingdom whose fortunes rest heavily on its sulfur mining colony on the volcanic island of Marjura, a resource central to both its economy and its magic. When the colony and the wider realm are threatened by encroaching supernatural forces and the machinations of powerful, self-interested factions, a cast of characters including soldiers, sorcerers, and ordinary people caught up in the unfolding crisis must navigate a narrative that blends grand fantasy world-building with contemporary satire and the pacing of a modern thriller. The novel establishes Trakorien's political and magical landscape, along with the looming threat tied to the titular fifth conflux, setting the stage for the trilogy's later volumes.
