Erik Granström is a Swedish fantasy author and game designer, now in his sixties, who began roleplaying in the late 1970s during the earliest editions of Dungeons & Dragons, moving from player to dungeon master and building elaborate physical dungeon models, including a foam-rubber mountain dungeon he has kept for decades. Trained as a veterinarian, Granström brought that professional background into his game and fiction writing, notably influencing his approach to anatomical and biological terminology within his fantasy settings. He published his first novel in 1980 before turning his focus to tabletop game design, creating the Chronicles of the Fifth Conflux series between 1987 and 1993, whose inaugural adventure module, Svavelvinter ("Winter of Sulphur"), became a commercial success and achieved lasting cult status within the Swedish gaming scene; original printed copies are now collector's items that fetch high prices at auction. Granström later expanded the Svavelvinter setting into a full prose fantasy series, publishing four novels totaling roughly 2,300 pages between 2004 and 2016, bringing his gaming world to a new audience of readers. In 2012, Swedish publisher Free League released a new roleplaying game adaptation of the setting, completing a creative circle between Granström's original tabletop material and his later fiction. He has also pursued cross-media collaborations, working with metal musician Christian Älvestam on a full-length concept album set within the Svavelvinter universe, released in 2018 with lyrics written by Granström himself.
