Synopsis
A novelette set in Osten Ard in the age before Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, first published in Robert Silverberg's anthology Legends (1998), whose publishers describe it as a dark and enthralling story of a great and haunted castle. Ages after the castle's first masters, the unlucky Lord Sulis, the Heron King, has found refuge from his pursuers in the gloomy, decaying fortress that will become the Hayholt of the trilogy and where the secret of the burning man lies. It was later collected in Williams's Rite: Short Work (2006) and adapted, with Raymond E. Feist's The Wood Boy, into a graphic novel by the Dabel Brothers in 2005.
