Tad Williams, born Robert Paul Williams on March 14, 1957, in San Jose, California, grew up in Palo Alto, where his mother nicknamed him Tad after a character in Walt Kelly's comic strip Pogo. Before becoming a full-time novelist, he held a range of jobs including newspaper delivery, food service, DJ work at the college radio station KFJC, shoe sales, and technical writing at Apple Computer from 1987 to 1990, alongside work on interactive multimedia and television concepts. He submitted his debut novel, Tailchaser's Song, to DAW Books in his mid-twenties, beginning a long publishing relationship that launched his career. Williams is best known for the epic Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series, the Otherland series, the Shadowmarch series, and the Bobby Dollar series, and he completed his return to the Osten Ard setting with The Last King of Osten Ard sequence, finished in 2024 with The Navigator's Children. He has sold over seventeen million copies of his books and is widely credited with influencing later fantasy writers, including George R. R. Martin. Williams has also written comics for DC and collaborated with his wife, Deborah Beale, on the young-adult series The Ordinary Farm Adventures. He lives in Northern California with Beale, their two children, and several pets.
