Synopsis
The Heart of What Was Lost is set in the immediate aftermath of the original Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy, following the defeat of the Storm King. The surviving Norns, the ancient and immortal people who served him, retreat north to their last stronghold, pursued by a human army determined to see the threat they pose ended for good. The novella follows this pursuit through three perspectives: a Rimmersman duke leading the human forces, a Norn commander preparing to defend her people, and a mercenary caught between the two sides, giving a close view of the war's human and Norn costs in the immediate wake of the trilogy's climactic battle.
