Overview
Tad Williams's second universe in this canon, alongside Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn / Osten Ard, Shadowmarch is a complete four-book epic fantasy tetralogy following the Eddon family's fight to hold their besieged castle-city of Southmarch against ancient, returning enemies, chiefly the inhuman Qar, once driven out of the region and now pressing back across a long-standing magical boundary. With the royal family scattered by war and captivity, twin siblings Barrick and Briony Eddon are forced into separate, increasingly perilous roles defending or reclaiming their fractured kingdom, while court intrigue and a returning old magic destabilize Southmarch from within as much as the siege does from without. The sequence, Shadowmarch (2004), Shadowplay (2007), Shadowrise (2010) and Shadowheart (2010), was also developed into a long-running interactive online game during the gap between its early and later volumes, an unusual cross-media extension for an epic fantasy series of its era.
