Synopsis
Having been identified as the Dragon Reborn, Rand al'Thor sets out on his own for the city of Tear, intending to test the truth of that identity by attempting to draw the legendary sword Callandor from the Stone of Tear, a feat said to be possible only for the true Dragon. His companions, Moiraine, Lan, the Ogier Loial, and Perrin, follow a step behind, trying to catch up before he faces danger alone. Meanwhile Mat Cauthon becomes caught up in his own separate difficulties involving lingering effects of an old curse and unexpected political entanglements, and other threads follow Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne as they hunt members of the Black Ajah, a secret group of Aes Sedai loyal to the Shadow. As these separate storylines advance, various factions converge on Tear, each with their own reasons for wanting to reach Rand first.
