Synopsis
Following the events of the first book, the story begins at the fortress of Fal Dara in Shienar, where the Amyrlin Seat, leader of the Aes Sedai, arrives and confirms that Rand al'Thor is the Dragon Reborn. Soon after, dark forces raid the fortress and make off with two significant prizes: the legendary Horn of Valere, said to be capable of summoning dead heroes back to fight, and a cursed dagger tied to one of Rand's companions. Rand, Mat, and Perrin join a party of Shienaran soldiers led by Lord Ingtar in pursuit of the thieves, while Egwene and Nynaeve travel separately to the White Tower to begin Aes Sedai training. The chase eventually leads toward the port city of Falme, recently occupied by an invading army from across the sea known as the Seanchan, whose presence complicates the search for the stolen artifacts.
