Synopsis

Set on a future Earth, The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit (1987) is the first novel in Storm Constantine's Wraeththu trilogy. Pellaz Cevarro, a young man living on a secluded family homestead, has heard rumors of the Wraeththu, a mysterious and feared cult of youths emerging out of cities ravaged by disease and conflict. When the enigmatic Cal arrives at the homestead, Pellaz begins to learn the truth behind those rumors: the Wraeththu are not simply a cult but a new, androgynous, and psychically gifted breed of human, poised to replace Homo sapiens on a devastated world. Drawn by Cal into this transformation, Pellaz is taken from his old life and led toward the process of inception that will remake him as har, setting him on a path away from everything he has known.

Notes

  • From the series record (Wraeththu): Core Canon here covers the original founding trilogy about the rise of the androgynous, mutant Wraeththu race in a near-future-turned-mythic Earth; the author later wrote several further Wraeththu trilogies and story collections in the same setting, treated as expanded material rather than Core Canon.
