Synopsis

The second novel of the Wraeththu Chronicles continues the story of humanity's transformation into the androgynous Wraeththu race through interwoven narratives. A major strand follows Swift, a young har coming of age in the Varr tribe's settlement of Galhea, son of the phyle's leader and the enigmatic witch-har Cobweb. As unrest grows between rival Wraeththu factions and the powerful Gelaming tribe pushes to bring the region of Megalithica under its control while branding the Varrs as barbaric, Swift must weigh troubling accusations against his own people against his childhood loyalties. In a parallel strand, Pellaz, having died at the end of the previous novel, is restored to life and rises to become Tigron, ruler of the Gelaming, in their city of Immanion. The book follows both threads as old loyalties and new political ambitions collide across the Wraeththu tribes.

Notes

  • From the series record (Wraeththu): Core Canon here covers the original founding trilogy about the rise of the androgynous, mutant Wraeththu race in a near-future-turned-mythic Earth; the author later wrote several further Wraeththu trilogies and story collections in the same setting, treated as expanded material rather than Core Canon.
