Synopsis

The third novel of the Wraeththu Chronicles opens with Calanthe, known as Cal, living under a changed identity and working in a brothel in the town of Fallsend, having fled the consequences of his earlier actions among the Wraeththu tribes. When he encounters Panthera, a har held in servitude there, Cal resolves to free him, and the two set out together across the sprawling, unfamiliar region of Jaddayoth. Their journey takes them through the territories of numerous Wraeththu tribes, each shaped by its own customs, beliefs, and physical mutations, forcing Cal to draw on hard experience to survive and grow. Years after the events of the previous novel, this journey is presented as a necessary trial that will determine whether Cal is prepared to face a final reckoning with his past, including the possibility of confronting Pellaz, now Tigron of the Gelaming, once more.

Notes

  • From the series record (Wraeththu): Core Canon here covers the original founding trilogy about the rise of the androgynous, mutant Wraeththu race in a near-future-turned-mythic Earth; the author later wrote several further Wraeththu trilogies and story collections in the same setting, treated as expanded material rather than Core Canon.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
