Synopsis
Carter Anderson is now Master of Evenmere and has driven back the Society of Anarchists for a time, but the peace is fragile. The Anarchists, who believe the world cannot be justified and should be remade, kidnap a young girl as part of a plan to replace Evenmere with a house of their own. Years later a rival house rises in the Outer Darkness beyond Evenmere's reach, turning people into clockwork and draining the original house of its power. Carter, his half-brother Duskin and a small group must travel outside the house to find the false one, and the girl who is held there, before it is too late. Traitors among them threaten the mission.
