Synopsis
Set in the year 733 within Kate Elliott's alternate medieval Europe, this fifth Crown of Stars novel finds King Henry pressing ever closer toward claiming the title of Emperor even as his kingdom of Wendar faces mounting threats from multiple directions, both earthly and supernatural. The story follows the Eagles Hanna and Hathui, the increasingly complicated Prince Sanglant, and a group of young heretics including Sigfrid, Ivar, and Baldwin, while the enigmatic Alain seeks obscurity within a monastery even as questions about his true nature persist. At the center of the unfolding crisis stands Antonia's ally Anne, who is manipulating Henry's army and the ancient standing henges scattered across the land toward a catastrophic goal: reopening the way for the long-exiled Ashioi, or Lost Ones, to return to a world unprepared for them.
