Synopsis

The Guns of Empire follows Janus bet Vhalnich as he leads Vordan's forces into what becomes his most demanding campaign yet, confronting the armies of Murnsk on hostile ground where extreme and seemingly unnatural weather compounds the difficulty of the fighting. As the campaign unfolds, Marcus and Winter continue in their respective commands, contending with the strain of prolonged warfare far from home even as political currents in Vordan continue to shift in their absence. An attempt to poison Janus leaves him gravely ill at a critical point in the campaign, throwing the army's plans and command structure into uncertainty. The stakes of the conflict grow sharply when older, darker forces tied to the setting's supernatural threats begin to stir in response to the deepening war, widening the scope of what Vordan's soldiers are fighting to contain.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Shadow Campaigns): Core = the 5 main-sequence novels (2013-2017), a flintlock/gunpowder fantasy military series. Expanded = two e-novellas set in the same continuity, The Penitent Damned (2013) and The Shadow of Elysium (2015), not catalogued.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
