Synopsis
The first novel of Katherine Kurtz's Heirs of Saint Camber trilogy (Del Rey, 1989) is set in the kingdom of Gwynedd, where the Deryni, a people with psychic and magical abilities, face persecution from the Crown and the Church under the Regents of the young King Alroy. The Camberian Council plans a deception: a new baptizer cult, led by Revan, will claim to wash away Deryni powers, offering willing Deryni a way to shield themselves from the Regents. Meanwhile Prince Javan works to maintain Deryni communication lines and manipulates Archbishop Hubert to gain protection, while Evaine sacrifices her life to free her father, Camber, from his limbo state.
