Synopsis

The Innocent Mage, published by Karen Miller in 2005, opens the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker duology. Asher is an ambitious young man from the fishing village of Restharven who leaves home to seek his fortune in Dorana, the capital of the kingdom of Lur, taking whatever work he can find. He starts out as a lowly stable hand at the Royal Palace, but his quick wit soon earns him a position as assistant to Prince Gar, the kingdom's magicless heir who serves as mediator between the ordinary, non-magical Olken and the ruling, magic-wielding Doranen. As Asher settles into palace life and an unlikely friendship with Gar, growing political unrest between Olken and Doranen threatens to draw him into affairs far larger than the fortune he originally set out to find.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
