Karen Miller was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and moved to Australia at age two, where she was raised and educated, graduating from the University of Technology, Sydney, after also spending three years living in England. Beyond her novel-writing career, she has worked extensively in local theatre as both a writer and director. Miller launched her fantasy career in 2005 with The Innocent Mage, the first volume of the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker duology, which was widely acclaimed on its release in Australia and established her as a significant voice in epic fantasy; the series was followed by her Godspeaker trilogy, comprising Empress of Mijak, The Riven Kingdom, and Hammer of God. Under the pen name K. E. Mills, she writes lighter, more comic fantasy, beginning with The Accidental Sorcerer (2008) as part of the Rogue Agent series, deliberately distinguishing these works from her darker epic fantasy published under her own name. Miller has also written media tie-in novels for major science fiction franchises, including Star Wars and Stargate SG-1. Her work has earned notable recognition, including finalist status for the Aurealis Award with The Innocent Mage in 2005 and a shortlisting for the James Tiptree, Jr. Award in 2007 for both Empress of Mijak and The Riven Kingdom, reflecting her novels' engagement with themes of gender, power, and colonization within immersive secondary-world settings.
