Synopsis
The story moves from the desert of Mijak to the island kingdom of Ethrea, a land of merchants and a church that will not tolerate a woman on the throne. The king of Ethrea is dying with no male heir, and his only daughter, Rhian, must find a way to keep the kingdom from falling into war and chaos as its dukes and its Prolate manoeuvre to rule through her or set her aside. Her unexpected allies are Dexterity Jones, a gentle widowed toymaker who begins to hear the voice of God himself, and Zandakar, a wounded exile from Mijak whom the toymaker shelters, a warrior who knows what is gathering across the sea. As Ethrea comes ever closer to civil war, Rhian must claim her throne, choose a husband and decide whom to trust, while Mijak's shadow lengthens over the world.

Notes
- From the series record (Godspeaker Trilogy): Karen Miller's dark theocratic epic of two lands, the blood-soaked desert empire of Mijak and the island kingdom of Ethrea: Hekat, a slave girl who hears the god and rises to be Mijak's empress, and Rhian, the princess who must hold Ethrea's throne against its own lords and then against Mijak.
