Synopsis
Six months after the events of The Throne of Fire, Carter and Sadie Kane travel to Dallas to meet with the magicians of the 51st Nome as they confront an impending catastrophe: within days, the chaos serpent Apophis is prophesied to rise, swallow the sun, and unmake the world. When their first attempt to avert this fails and the Dallas Nome is destroyed, the siblings pursue a more elaborate plan, which sends them searching for a magical shadow box tied to the boy pharaoh Tutankhamun and consulting the god Thoth about the link between shadows and statues. Along the way they uncover betrayals within their own ranks, including rebel magicians who have allied themselves with Apophis, and must call on a range of Egyptian gods and their human hosts for aid.
