Synopsis

As winter closes in, John Gregory takes Tom Ward to his remote winter house, a bleak place cut off from the rest of the County. The house has a long history, and Tom soon learns that Gregory has kept things there that he never mentioned. Under the garden, witches who have been bound and buried still linger, and the cold nights bring feral creatures to the door. Gregory's past also returns in the form of Morgan Hurst, a former apprentice who turned to necromancy and now seeks to wake something much older than himself. Tom must work through the winter alongside his master while he learns what Gregory chose to hide, and what it might cost them both.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Wardstone Chronicles): Thirteen novels following Tom Ward, apprentice to the County's spook, from 2004 to 2013.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
