Synopsis

Imperial Justice Sir Konrad Vonvalt and his apprentice Helena Sedanka investigate accusations of heresy and dark magic spreading through the Sovan Empire, continuing the legal and magical inquiries begun in the previous novel. They uncover a dangerous conspiracy involving corrupt provincial magistrates and a traitorous priest who are amassing military forces and forbidden magical weapons in a scheme to overthrow the emperor. As the scope of the plot becomes clear, Vonvalt and Helena must race across the empire to reach the capital in time to warn the throne, even as the institutions of imperial law and faith that once gave Vonvalt his authority begin to turn against him and complicate every step of their journey.

Notes

  • From the series record (Empire of the Wolf): A completed trilogy following an Emperor's Justice -- a travelling magistrate-and-executioner of a sprawling, crumbling empire -- and his clerk, as imperial law collides with rebellion, religious zealotry, and the empire's own internal rot.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
